The first. The downside, of course, is that this is much less portable.
If this means that bst files sitting in TEXMF will now always be
output with full path, I'm very much opposed. This would damage the
whole principle of the TEXMF tree and be a major loss of fuctionality.
However, I've not followed this discussion in detail, so I might have
gotten it wrong.

No, the idea would be to use the full path only when it was needed to disambiguate. I.e., if you have to bst files in your tree with the same name. The problem, not that it's a huge one, is that we list both files in the dialog, but you get the same result whichever you choose. So the other suggestion was only to list e.g. "econometrica" once.
