You can obtain something similar by highlighting the math expression
and then Insert->Preview form the menu.

Well, the preview is supposed to give an exact preview of what you
entered and we cannot second guess the user. Maybe the empty math
was purposely inserted for some reason and showing an empty rectangle
may defeat the preview concept.
