I have a partially working patch now, in the sense that I can suppress
deleted material. The only remaining problem is the metrics. If I've got
some deleted material, the row is too short and the cursor shows in the
wrong place. Where do we calculate which characters are in the row and
so forth? I've hunted through the code but haven't found it yet.
