One last idea from me: if you insert a TOC, a figure, a table, literatur-list, and so on the name is given. E.g. in the german version "Inhaltsverzeichnis", "Literaturverzeichnis",... But sometims it is needed to have own names there. E.g. "Inhalt" and "Literatur" without "-verzeichnis" behind it. Or in english you could self decide if it is "figure" or "fig.", "table of contents" or "contents", and so on.
There should be standard-strings, but that should be changeable without knowing LaTeX - in the LyX-GUI. And because it is LyX and not Word it shouldn't be that you have to edit e.g. every "figure" in "fig." by hand. But in the document settings, where you could change the default-strings And the best of all: instead of e.g. my suggestion for choosing if the page-number should be in middle or corner, this idea don't affect the layout.
