This allows for the possibility of LyX opening the file nonetheless
while corrupting/truncating some feature and without the user's
knowledge. Very dangerous.

This has been discussed earlier on the list [1] and there were two
basic ideas proposed:
- provide a download button that would automatically install the
latest stable 'lyx2lyx' dir into the user's profile. There were
security concerns and no one volunteered to maintain such a feature.
- provide a message to the user explaining how to work around this
problem, namely to manually download and install the latest stable
'lyx2lyx' dir. This could work but requires some advanced knowledge
from the user, plus it could potentially create problems in future
upgrades (when the user would need to repeat the operation). Either of
the two solutions would still not help you with the 'trunk' issue.

All else seemed off the table. Regards
Liviu
