suggests to let alone KPSE_DOT...

I think it means your startup shell should not define this in normal use. OTOH, if it exists, there is a reason. And we can be fairly confident that we are not going to overwrite an existing value :)

Thinking about it, we don't need to set variables such as BIBINPUTS and
BSTINPUTS, because we already deal with .bib and .bst files by copying
them to the temp dir.

This is another hack that we could get rid of.

I wonder whether miktex supports this.
