Strange problem with autotools build on mac

After returning from vacation, I noticed that building with autotools is 
now broken on my 10.6.8 iMac. The link breakage can be fixed by invoking 
make as
   make QT4_LIB="-framework Carbon -framework Cocoa"
Has something happened that removed the libraries from the normal link 
invocation? Have I done something wrong? I could not find any suspect 
commit.
