I don't think this is a bug, I think it is ordinary LaTeX behavior.  Try the
following (after reseting the text style): use the text style dialog to add an
underbar to just the text preceding the equation; inside the math inset,
highlight the contents, type \underline and hit the space bar. (Don't worry that
the equation vanishes while typing; it will reappear when you hit space.)
