1. I use \varepsilon (looks like an inverse 3) more often than \epsilon
(looks similar to \in).
2. It is a matter of consistency. At least I was annoyed when something
that look on screen like \varepsilon got printed as \epsilon.
3. There is always the \def\varepsilon{\epsilon} trick.
4. There might be some time when \epsilon and \varepsilon glyphs both are
available in the screen font. Than the switch from \epsilon in ERT to a
displayed \epsilon is a natural extension.
