This is a good way. It satisfies me (as it does not polute source tree in
background) and at the same time enables
the developper to have the remerge ready for svn.
I could make a special target update_po (don't know if target like "update-po"
is allowed).
This target will only be there, if configured with NLS enabled of course.

What do you mean with tarball? Source files only?
What should not go into the tarball (but is in svn) should be described
somewhere.
