    I don't really understand what do you mean in point 5, but
%SystemRoot%\System32 from point 3 is one of the three default
directories included in PATH right after a fresh installation of (at
least) XP, so I'd assume there are programs that depend on this.

    Much better workaround would be to modify the system-wide PATH to
contain the path of ImageMagick at the beginning - that way you wouldn't
have to modify LyX. Make sure to restart LyX after that.

    The convert.exe utility is a tool of minor importance (converting
FAT32 fs to NTFS), so this change shouldn't do any harm to the system.
