Centos 5 is derived from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 that was based on Fedora 
Core (the last version to have this distinction) 6. FC6 was released more than 
four and a half years ago. The policy is to use (mostly) the same siftware 
versions through all the supported life time.

At the time that RHEL was developed the qt applications were starting were in 
the transition to qt 4.

So it seems a reasonable assumption. :-)

Regarding the compiler I think that sometimes there are new gcc versions 
shipped but with a suffix, although I am not sure here.

yum list gcc* will tell you the whole story. :-)
