So I think an automatic tool, like a command-line cls2layout script,
is more urgent today than an editor as described in the wiki page. You
specify a .cls file, the tool parses it, identifies the high-level
macros and environments, and creates the .layout file for it. That's it
Perhaps such a tool is already part of the intended work for the
layout editor project, but I couldn't figure this out, as the
description sounds rather like a point-and-click thing.
Good point. Normally you want to build a .layout that mimics the effect
of a .cls/.sty (or .dot) provided by the publisher.
If you could parse the latter files and automagically build a .layout,
it would be great.
However, a point-and-click tool could be useful for generating not only
a .layout, but also (and especially, I would say) a corresponding
.cls/.sty style file of general use for LaTeX users. I'm sure it would
be highly appreciated. As I observed here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/msg166156.html
that would allow to broaden the scope of the GSoC idea so as to
non-necessarily tie it completely to LyX.
A publisher could then use such a tool for customizing its own LaTeX
template, and provide also a custom LyX .layout template for free :-).
(but generation of compatible LyX/LaTeX/OO[/M$] templates would be the
killer app! -- probably not easy to achieve in the given time-frame,
however an internal generic/modular template generation engine might be
useful).
My 2 cents.
