I think that would be fantastic. +1 As a way of starting, you might take a look at some of the icons in the Oxygen set or in the faenza set. We might also look at finding an artist to create a custom set for LyX? Maybe for 2.1? The Ubuntu artwork team has recently been looking for better ways to become involved in upstream projects, perhaps they might be interested in this challenge?
