Agreed. 

I use Notes as placeholer with explanatory text.

IMV, a template document (as opposed to an example) does not need to be
"compilable" without filling out.

Is there an additional advantage to the obvious "the template can also
serve as example for the final look without changes"?

I usually do not select, but place the cursor

and press DEL or BS or just keep the notes.

I do not object if you feel special "template" insets are worth the
effort, but for me they are not.
