I think it's weird for a maintainer to have different build environments
for branch and trunk. Now for 1.6 we have higher requirements than for 2.0.
I would not be against asking for a newer gettext version, but we have
to make sure that it works on on windows. I do not remember what the
constraints are there.
OTOH, we can continue to distribute 0.16.1 in our sources (necessary for
building) but tell mac users to use the tools from 0.18. I would propose
to remove the workaround from trunk.
