You may be having some kind of memory shortage. Try compiling without
debug information which will save both memory and disk space.
Do:
make clean
setenv CXXFLAGS -O
configure [whatever configure options you use]
make
And see what happens

PS: Shouldn't we have -O as the default compilation setting for a stable
release, -g -O for cvs and pre-releases ?
