A typical example of when tex<->lyx breaks with formulas is when people
use ``helpful'' (or ``clever'') macros like
  \newcommand{\be}{\begin{equation}}
  \newcommand{\ee}{\end{equation}}

A single use of these and -- poof -- the structure of the document is dead. LyX would be supposed to output such horrors for the pleasure of being a nice cooperative tool?

The constructs are real-life ones, I am sure you saw them too. I give them as an example. Every LyX user trying to cooperate with some LaTeX user will eventually find such idiosyncrasies and complain that LyX is not correct for reversible translation.

Claiming that we try to do it is beginning to open pandora's box.
