unless i misunderstood what you mean by updating on disk
i tried to say its not good idea to do it at least for rc.
I mean having a function allowing the user to explcitely ask for
an upgrade. The other solution is to use a different userdir for
each version and have an import functin. Sharing a .lyx dir between
versions is not going to work IMO.
