The files are "buried" inside the application and the file open box starts in 
my home dir.
There is no option to traverse into the application bundle.

The directory is "$HOME/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6.7".
(because of the version suffix -1.6.7)

Why does LyX look in that directory on OSX and look in (e.g.) /usr/share/lyx/templates/ on Linux? That's the issue. This gets set in Preferences, so it should just be a matter of setting that correctly.
