I've searched another evening and couldn't find a solution or explanation.
I'll give up for now. :(

Regarding the Tiger support: the distribution candidate .dmg is now 39 MB big.
If someone can test if the 10.5 SDK build with 10.4 deployment target is working
on Tiger I'll happily upload it for the test! Is anyone able to access a Tiger 
system?
