My plan was to release soonish a maintenance release which at least
contains the spellchecker fix (that could be a 1.6.6.1 release which
contains the fix for this bug only -- a patched 1.6.6 -- or a 1.6.7
release with what we have now plus some important fixes.)

I guess the procedure depends on how you (all) rate the importance of
pending bugs, and how soon and how "safe" we can fix them.

I'm open to suggestions.

BTW I do not follow a fixed release cycle. Usually, I just think of
releases whenever I think we have significant improvements, no severe
(fixable) issues and when my agenda permits :-)
