Thanks, with utf8 encoding it works here as well, although the locale is still 
"C". However, this is not a major problem, as I can easily change the locale by 
using Sys.setlocale() within the Sweave/R code chunk.

Can someone confirm the problem with XeTeX and Sweave?

I cannot quite confirm this. See attached LyX file (note: with utf8
encoding) and PDF result compiled with alpha2.

Let me know if you need some other info on my system.
