Not footnotes, but yellow LyX Notes. I turned on the outliner, and

and pressed Ctrl+N, Document->Outliner, clicked the yellow note icon,

I could not get lyx 2.0 (SVN) to crash. I'm compiling 1.6.6 (SVN) at the moment.
...and 1.6.6 doesn't crash either :)
(I notice the outliner is visible as default too in 1.6.6, not sure if
that is significant...)

Yes, this is just bug #6522 (http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/6522). Fixed
in 1.6.6.
