Dear LyX developers
These days I'm working on a LyX/Sweave document and discovered how to
properly handle lables/cross-references, which are very helpful. One
eye-candy functionality that seems missing is to display in a tooltip
the exact number that the cross-reference will generate in the .pdf
file. This would avoid to generate the .pdf file in order to verify
that the cross-references are not messed up. Of course, it is possible
to check that the labels coincide, but it is so much easier to simply
confirm visually that the numbers add up.
I've thought about this before, and it's actually an important matter as
concerns HTML output, where we'd like to be able to put the right
numbers into the HTML file. The problem, however, is that it is not at
all any easy matter to know what number the cross-ref will generate,
because it is not an easy matter to know which counter is being
referenced. If we knew that, then it'd be easy. But it could be the
number of a section, a footnote, an equation, or even some user defined
counter, depending upon exactly where the label is, and indeed upon
things that could, in principle, be in ERT. So, as far as the HTML
output is concerned, I think we have to parse the aux file to do this
right. That's not really an option in the GUI.
