Hi, I am using Ubuntu 9.x with Intel Atom 330 processor (quad core), 32-bit linux-2.6.28.9 with SMP, Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller, 2GB RAM. LyX 1.6.2 and LyX 1.5.5 are compiled against Qt 4. LyX 1.4.4 is compiled against Qt 3 -mt.
I have an impression that the performance of the X servier (I'm using X.org) is quite bad for some reason on this system. It's perhaps due to the Intel Atom CPU or due to bad graphics card or to the configuration of the X server or due to some other reason. Sometimes switching between virtual screens takes many seconds. However, typing text on this system was never slow until I tried LyX 1.6.2. I installed LyX 1.5.5 and LyX 1.4.4 in my home directory and LyX 1.6.2 normally (systemwide). When I edit a large document with LyX 1.6.2, typing every letter results in a large latency due to X.org activity. This is true in the text mode and also inside math boxes; I set the options to switch off all autocompletion, however I still have an impression that math boxes always have autocompletion. Typing in the same document with LyX 1.5.5 results in slow performance in math boxes but performance is OK when typing text. Typing in LyX 1.4.4 gives adequate performance in every case. I also tried to use LyX 1.6.2 on another system where I don't see this slow performance. The other system is a Sony Vaio laptop with Intel CPU but not an Atom CPU and of course a different graphics card. In any case it seems to be that LyX 1.6.2 introduced a different way of handling fonts that puts a lot more load on the X server than LyX 1.4.4. Maybe it's a combination of Qt 4 and new code in LyX 1.5 and 1.6. I hope this helps. Thank you again for the LyX software. I use it every day for everything.
