Load the attached the file, delete the 'x' and hit the spacebar. Now I see "\phi" in red italics. After hitting spacebar again, the "\phi" becomes roman. So, you're right, it is not exactly bug 5923, it is worse... I suggest reverting r30398, r30396, r30395, r30393, r30392, r29387, and trying to find the correct fix for #5923. -- Enrico
