Ok, you lost me there. What I meant was, can the configure script insert into the config document (near the top) something like

"Your home directory is /home/bozo/.lyx"

or

"Your home directory is C:\Documents and Settings\bozo\Application Data\lyx16"

depending of course on the OS (and basing what is written on the location the installer used when setting up the user directory)? In other words, expand the ~ in what is written in the config document. That would alleviate some confusion on Windows with people whose home directory is on a server, or a D: partition, or anything other than C:.
