We already support _every_ available Unicode symbol and take care of the needed packages. (That was my goal when I extended the unicodesymbols file for LyX 1.5.) If you find a character where this is not the case, please report this.

We don't support the characters used by apple for its keyboard symbols, and this causes grief when trying to
typeset Shortcuts.lyx with Qt/Mac 4.5.X

When I type a wrong binding, due to some LyX quirk I can get things like a music symbol, which
if AFAIK not handled by LyX.

What about my proposal:

\...@ifundefined{\iddots ...

This assures that the package is only loaded when it is needed.

I think this is too complicated for a problem which is only theoretical.
