To be able to use LyX with all languages, these patterns need to be installed. On MiKTeX, the easiest way is to add checks for them in chkconfig.ltx via checking the LaTeX-packages that provide them. Only checking for the pattern files doesn't install them when they are missing. When you think it is waste of memory, I can check the LyX menu language the users wants at installation time and then make MiKTeX to install patterns for this language. But this will then only work with my installer, and only for Windows users.

To improve the situation for all users we can add the list if available patterns to LaTeXConfig.lyx. When a user then e.g. set in LyX the document language to Italian we check if the Italian pattern is installed by looking at LaTeXConfig.lyx or somewhere else. If it is not installed, we pop up a warning. I guess this is what Jürgen proposed, right? Unfortunately I'm technically too limited to implement this. I hope that somebody else have an idea to implement this.
