As long as one does not want the more advanced features (additional
fonts, XeTeX specifics or incompatible packages), it might be simpler to
keep the choice (as currently LaTeX/dvips/ps2pdf vs. LaTeX/dvipdfm vs.
PdfLaTeX) so that without going into Document>Settings I can try with the
various backends.

Indeed. 
It might even get me into the habit of using XeTeX now and then...
