I think this has been fixed with the following changeset, which removed
ui/Makefile.am. I am not sure whether it applies to 1.5.X, though.

Well, there is still lyx-1.5.7/src/frontends/qt4/ui/Makefile, which
means, the fix was, probably, never merged into 1.5.x (although back
then it was still a maintained branch).
