Dear LyX developers, In LyX 1.6, I can type Greek text like λογος in Unicode and the printout will show it correctly even if I do not set the text language to Greek.
However, the opposite does not work: if the text language is set to Greek, Latin text will be regarded as transcription of Greek and printed in Greek letters, so "logos" becomes "λογος". There where 2 postings by Greek users to the lyx-users mailing list about this issue recently. As we put some efforts into a "get what you type" Unicode support (e.g. workarounds and "force" flags for "sigma" versus "final sigma"), it seems odd that a Greek user will get Englisch words in a Greek document printed with Greek letters unless the text language is set. OTOH, for backwards compatibility and easier input of Greek text without a Greek keyboard, there should be an option to use the LGR/babel transcription as currently. May I propose a new Greek variant that circumvents the transcription provided by the babel package and LGR font encoding but relies on the LyX unicodesymbols translation to keep Latin chars Latin and Greek chars Greek? The new language variant would need to ensure that: * the font encoding is reset from the babel-default LGR to some other default value (most probably T1), and * the "textgreek" feature in unicodesymbols is active. Proposal for the GUI names: Greek # Greek without transcription Greek (LGR transcription) # Greek with LGR transcription Greek (polytonic) # polytonic Greek without transcription Greek (polytonic, LGR) # polytonic Greek with LGR transcription This could be easily expanded to other transcriptions, like Greek (ibicus transcription) Günter
