What are the remaining issues of the "merging colors" patch? AFAICS, there
were some final concerns by Jean-Marc, which seem easy to address. What are
the risks? In general, I'd prefer a proper solution on which maybe also other
fixes can be based (such as the color in selection bug, # 5656).

The proper (in my opinion) solution is committed as revisions 28420--28423.
Are these ok for branch ?
