i propose this structure of root/lyx-tests/trunk:
automatic/ -> your stuff for automatical generation (choose your own dirname)
check/ -> i plan some work on lyx2lyx checks
attic/ -> old docs
if there are no objections i'll do ths one day or feel free to do it.

Using lyx-tests/ sounds like a good idea.
Right now I've started using bitbucket as per Dov's suggestion, it seems
quite promising. However, the stuff should eventually go into SVN. Once I
come up with suitable names/directory structure, I'll see about moving it
into lyx-test.
About moving the old stuff into an attic/, I don't see a problem with
that.
