This strikes me as a good idea actually. How well does it work?

Note that Apple Publications Style Guide, in the "Style and Usage"
section, recommends to use Command- and Option- (not Cmd and Opt).

I am not sure this is what we want to do. Quote from the above
document:

  Command key: On first use in print user documentation, identify the
  Command key with its symbol: Command ([symbol here]) key. Thereafter,
  just use Command key. Don’t use Apple key. 

  It’s OK to use the Command key symbol in a list of shortcuts.
