And I agree with your FIXME, too. The current system is kind of fragile.
Perhaps the best thing to do would be to have some meta-character there.
Maybe a trivial inset, which doesn't draw itself and doesn't write
itself, either? Actually, I sometimes think I'd like to see "end of
paragraph" symbols, as you can in some editors. Then it could draw
itself....
