In a branch I've updated to boost 1.36:

Shouldn't we also update trunk? I know we are in the release candidate phase
but I don't think it would be critical, because there was only a trivial patch
of the lyx code, thus the only errors which can occur are:

1. boost introduces new bugs
2. our wrong usage of boost becomes visible

both is both not very likely. And we could do a extra rc round.
What would be the benefit?

boost 1.35 doesn't support the actual msvc compiler, and 1.35 always gives
a warning on windows when compiling regexp.

MSVC 2008? Also in the subset we need?

Yes, MSVC 2008 is the compiler used for LyX Windows installers for at last a year. MSVC2005 and 2003 are not supported anymore.

Actually I would not change boost versions so short before a release.
We had bad luck with boost::fs once, and it's basically irreversible
once it shows up on a major distribution.

Well, I understand but 1.36 is already one year old and we don't use boost as much as in the past. So I reckon that the risk is very minimal and we should upgrade boost before rc3 so that we have more testing before 1.6.0.
