A quick search in the list of entries would indeed be nice. As far as
regexp are concerned, this is indeed nice, but only for experienced
users.

And people will complain that they cannot get a $ or a %. Keep in mind
that LyX is also for people who do not want to hear about LaTeX. And
of course, $ is not part of LaTeX culture, since you are supposed to
use \(...\) !
