There is always a tension between being generalist and being tied to any
particular system. I would like to compare this with Darwinian evolution.

With the current system that we have today we are very close to latex, and if
we want to have the same degree of success (for other backends) we need to use
ERT for other formats (docbook/XML or text). It is not possible to use the
same document and to export it docbook, or to text without a more dynamic
layout format.

A good analogy with the current model is the layout files are our own version
of css (that supports different outputs, the screen and the backend: latex,
plain text or docbook).

In order to faithfully convert the same document to different backends we need
something more powerful than just css. With all its deficiencies xslt provides
a standard language to transform documents.
