BTW, this also happens in text mode, so it is a more general problem.
However, in math mode this particular problem can be cured patching the
unicosymbols file as follows:

-0x00e8 "\\`{e}"     "" "" # LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH GRAVE
+0x00e8 "\\`{e}"     "" "" "\\acute{\rm e}" # LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH GRAVE
