Enhanced solutions were proposed, but unless there are patches (and I guess
this is too late for 1.6), going back to the status quo ante (except for the
new packages that need to be loaded after babel) seems to be the way to go,
for the time being.
That would be the attached patch.
Would that have any implication with regard to pdf option for example?
When I switched my documents to 1.6 I erased everything related to that
in the preamble; I hope I won't have to change my preamble back again...
