No. But these things are singe characters. The idea is to set the text attribute via the text style dialog as the users expect it (at least the colloegues I recently explained LyX), and as it is in OOo, Word, Abiword, .... The output can be formatted text or an inset.
We shouldn't aim to be as good as OOo. We should aim to be "better", by our own standards.
Fine with me. I yesterday played a bit with the code but didn't come far. Due to my limited time I'll have to postpone my work and will concentrate on the documentation.
But as it seems you have a clear idea how to do it with insets and to achieve the usability as in OOo, please try to implement it. This would be a great improvement. Otherwise we have no other choice than to postpone it for LyX 1.7.
