I do not know if this is generic, or if it relates to how we currently
build on the Mac, but it is for release builds IMHO not very nice.
I just tried this (Win XP), and it's similar here. Perhaps this could
be changed to --version producing just the first line (version #) and
something like --build that spews all the remaining stuff?
