True. I am no expert in open source development but it's true that smaller commits would help Joost. Please try to commit stuff incrementally so that others have a chance to see and comment the changes. If you want more people involved in the installer stuff, you should also be more verbose in your commit logs.
I was not involved in the development of the new features, thus I won't understand the code right now, nor could I find bugs or potential security or bug issues.
Well, I haven't seen you send patches to the list for your installer either, Uwe ;-)

FYI, that's the way commercial programs like Matlab are doing. It's true that it simpler to maintain.

Are these minimum install? I mean, do you install only files required for LyX to run smoothly?
