I see no reason for a dedicated server. It takes a lot of time to maintain the server, to keep it secure and to get the money. Are there even enough donations to pay for such a thing?
SourceForge is almost never down, automatically puts the downloads on a large number of fast mirror servers and has convenient systems to control the access to SVN, web, downloads etc. The performance is also quite OK.
