Just to add to the general puzzlement: I happened to play with apple's TextEdit (the default Mac OS X rtf editor) last friday. The files are .rtf file. Copy and paste an image. The file transparently gets a .rtfd extension, and it is actually a directory containing an rtf file and an image. Remove the image, and it is a plain rtf file again. No UI. Just works. JMarc
