Hello everybody,

I think it is time to define now a fixed release schedule towards LyX 1.6.

I read today that José plans to release it in about 5 months which is too long away. LyX 1.6svn is in principle in a good shape, although there are enough bugs to fix. I think we are feature complete for the next release, except of
- the rewritten search and replace UI from Tommaso and Abdel
  http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3998
- the tex2lyx Unicode support (as this prevents to update tex2lyx for the
features of LyX 1.6)

So when we concentrate on bugfixing from now on, we should be able to release
LyX 1.6 until summer.

Here's my proposal:

- out now an alpha2 and announce it
- release another alpha end of April or beginning of May
- release the first beta in mid of May
- then we have to decide again about the final release date

To reach that goal, we have to concentrate on fixing bugs and regressions, that means no more code optimizations and new features. André has done a very good job in optimizing the code, but now we need now to stabilize LyX 1.6svn. Every new code cleanup and cosmetic can introduce new bugs and we need the developer time now for bug fixing.

Until the first beta, we need to implement or drop the two features from above and fix all known crashes if possible.

Why this email? I have the feeling that we don't focus at the moment on the stable release and think with a defined goal, we will refocus again. I have that feeling, because the last 4 weeks many new bugs have been introduced and the regression list grows and grows:

(There are even bugs that prevent documentation files to be processed:
