Is the problem about the time it takes (and network activity), or that running Reconfigure ruins your configuration. Normally the second problem should not happen and would be a bug. The first problem is not in Reconfigure itself, but rather in the kind of crazy activities MikTeX engages in when doing the check. I am not sure why it has to be like that, but it is creating a lot of pain to work around. For people who are not using miktex or told it not to engage in fancy package auto-downloading, reconfigure is quick enough and a dialog box would be a pain. JMarc
