In a week or two, the developers plan to release a first alpha version of
LyX 1.6.0. This will be the first release in the coming 1.6-series, which
as usual include changes to the LyX file format. Initially the alpha
version will not be backwards compatible with LyX 1.5.x, but this issue
will be handled before the final release of LyX 1.6.0 through one or more
additional releases in the 1.5-series, which will be able to read the new
file format.

This is probably going to another one or two 1.5.x release before
LyX 1.6.0, which will be made available as a first alpha version
later this week. Before the release of the final 1.6.0, a least
one 1.5.x version that is able to read the 1.6 format will be
released.
